Printing your document as a book on letter size paper
Printing your document as a book on letter size paper in landscape orientation involves a few additional steps to ensure the pages are set up correctly for bookbinding. This setup is often referred to as "booklet" format. Here's how to do it in Microsoft Word:
- Open the document you wish to print as a booklet.
- Change Page Orientation and Size:
- Go to the 'Layout' or 'Page Layout' tab.
- Change the orientation to 'Landscape'.
- Ensure the page size is set to 'Letter'.
Margins and Layout:
- In the 'Margins' dropdown, select 'Custom Margins'.
- In the 'Page Setup' dialog box, go to the 'Margins' tab.
- Under 'Pages', select 'Book fold'. This should automatically adjust your margins to suit a booklet format.
- You may want to adjust the 'Gutter' margin. This is the extra space added to the inner margin to account for the binding of the book.
Apply Mirror Margins:
Ensure that 'Mirror margins' is selected. This sets up your document so the margins are mirrored on facing pages, which is essential for book formatting.
Headers, Footers, and Page Numbers:
- If you’re adding headers, footers, or page numbers, remember to set them up for mirrored margins.
- For booklets, page numbers are typically placed at the bottom center or outer corners.
Printing Setup:
- Once your document is ready, go to 'File' > 'Print'.
- In the 'Print' dialog, choose the printer you intend to use.
- Under 'Settings', select 'Print on Both Sides' and choose 'Flip pages on short edge'. This ensures that when you fold the printed sheets, the pages are in the correct order and orientation.
