Prepping a laptop for outside repair work

When sending your laptop in for repair, it’s best to take both security and practical precautions to protect your data and hardware. Here’s a step-by-step checklist to follow to protect any sensitive information:

  1. Back up all data: Save your important files to OneDrive, an external drive, or cloud storage. Don’t assume the laptop will come back with your files intact.

  2. Remove sensitive information: If possible, wipe personal/confidential data before sending it in.

  3. Encrypt your drive: use BitLocker (Windows) or another encryption tool is enabled so your data isn’t accessible if someone removes the drive.

  4. Sign out of accounts: Log out of Microsoft, email, and other accounts to reduce exposure.

  5. Disable saved passwords: Remove stored browser and app credentials.

  6. Remove accessories: Take out dongles, SD cards, USB drives, wireless mouse receivers, etc.

  7. Remove SIM card or external storage.

  8. Detach personal stickers/labels you want to keep.

  9. Ship only what is required: Unless the repair shop specifically requests it, send just the laptop (not your charger, case, or other items).

  10. Document current condition: Take clear photos of the laptop (screen, casing, ports) before packing.

  11. Charge the battery to at least 30%—some repair depots prefer it.

  12. If a shipping box is not sent by the repair shop, use a sturdy box with padding.

  13. Follow shipping label/instructions carefully—some services include insured shipping.
