Prepping a laptop for outside repair work
When sending your laptop in for repair, it’s best to take both security and practical precautions to protect your data and hardware. Here’s a step-by-step checklist to follow to protect any sensitive information:
- Back up all data: Save your important files to OneDrive, an external drive, or cloud storage. Don’t assume the laptop will come back with your files intact.
- Remove sensitive information: If possible, wipe personal/confidential data before sending it in.
- Encrypt your drive: use BitLocker (Windows) or another encryption tool is enabled so your data isn’t accessible if someone removes the drive.
- Sign out of accounts: Log out of Microsoft, email, and other accounts to reduce exposure.
- Disable saved passwords: Remove stored browser and app credentials.
- Remove accessories: Take out dongles, SD cards, USB drives, wireless mouse receivers, etc.
- Remove SIM card or external storage.
- Detach personal stickers/labels you want to keep.
- Ship only what is required: Unless the repair shop specifically requests it, send just the laptop (not your charger, case, or other items).
- Document current condition: Take clear photos of the laptop (screen, casing, ports) before packing.
- Charge the battery to at least 30%—some repair depots prefer it.
- If a shipping box is not sent by the repair shop, use a sturdy box with padding.
- Follow shipping label/instructions carefully—some services include insured shipping.
