Backing up a Windows 11 Pro laptop

Using Windows File History

 

  1. Connect an External Drive:
    • Plug in an external hard drive or USB drive with sufficient storage for your backup.
  2. Open Settings:
    • Click on the Start menu and select Settings (or press Win + I).
  3. Navigate to Backup Settings:
    • Go to Update & Security > Backup.
  4. Set Up File History:
    • Under the Back up using File History section, click on Add a drive and select the connected external drive.
  5. Configure Backup Options:
    • Once the drive is selected, click on More options to configure how frequently you want to back up your files and which folders you want to include or exclude.
    • By default, File History backs up important folders like Documents, Pictures, Music, Desktop, etc.
  6. Start the Backup:
    • Click on Back up now to initiate the first backup. Windows will start copying files to the external drive.
